Employers Background Checks

Nearly all employers have background checks conducted on candidates, but not all screenings are the same. In general, employers want background checks to verify the information on your resume. With phony degrees and fudging job dates becoming increasingly common, an employer needs to see if a candidate is genuine – or if he or she is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

Employers, however, seldom have the time to conduct their own background checks. Although employers may conduct online criminal background checks on a cursory level, this information can be inaccurate or incomplete. Typically, employers outsource these investigations to a background check company, one which thoroughly goes through criminal records, contacts employers and schools, and verifies names and addresses.

Background checks are seldom the first step an employer takes, however. Filling an opening begins with a job advertisement, and then resumes are examined to find a group of qualified individuals. All selected individuals are interviewed, and once the group is narrowed down to a select few, an employer will require background checks. Although not the be-all-end-all of hiring decisions, background checks can make employers turn away candidates once thought to be good matches.

Pre-Employment Criminal Records Checks

Background checks are variable and depend on the information an employer needs. Some may request a national criminal background check or a credit history examination, and others may just request a search for criminal records on a state level. In addition to requesting information to verify your resume and application, an employer may request one or more of the following criminal background checks:

California Prison Records

Records from all counties in California are searched for convictions that lead to imprisonment.

Criminal Offender Profile Summary

State and county records from 41 states and sex offender registries are examined.

Federal District Court Criminal Searches
